Cold therapy in history
Building services upon a rich heritage of innovation
The word Cryotherapy could lead you to believe its origins are from a modern-day science textbook, but it was actually created by the Greeks, with “Cryo” meaning cold and “Therapia” meaning cure.
The use of low temperature treatments can be traced back to the Roman Empire, the Ancient Egyptians and even Greek physician Hippocrates, all of whom were aware of the anti-inflammatory and healing capabilities of cold therapy.
Doctor Yamaguchi from Japan modernised whole body Cryotherapy in 1978 when he used freezing sessions as a way of improving the body’s immune system when treating patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Cryotherapy was endorsed as a form of physical therapy by a group of European scientists who were developing an Olympic rehabilitation centre in Spala, Poland.
